Hexadecimal to Decimal Conversion: Steps, Chart, and Examples

Table of Contents

    Hexadecimal and decimal are some of the different types of number systems. There are other types; octal and binary number systems. These systems were designed to help us organize and represent numbers in maths, finance, engineering, and science.

    In this article, we discuss what the hexadecimal system is, convert hexadecimal to decimal number systems with examples, and practice questions.

    How to Convert Hexadecimal to Decimal

    The decimal number system (base 10) is the most commonly known base number system. Its 10 symbols 0-9) make it most convenient for real-life applications such as measuring time, counting money, and so on,

    The Hexadecimal, however, has a base number system of 16 symbols (0-F). Although we don’t use the hexadecimal system as widely as the decimal base system, the hexadecimal is used for other important tasks like programming, web development, and computing.

    Cool fact: Hex means 6 and decimal stands for the base number of 10–this explains how the name, hexadecimal is gotten.

    The Hexadecimal to Decimal chart makes it easier to convert  from decimal to hexadecimal:

    How to Convert Hexadecimal to Decimal 1

    From this hexadecimal to decimal conversion table, note two things: the values of each system begin with 0. Also, you can tell that the decimal value and hexadecimal values share the same digits from 0-9, and then from 10 – 15, the hexadecimal values change to A – F.

    Hexadecimal to decimal example

    If we were to convert 36E16  to a decimal system, here’s how:

    We’d multiply each number from the rightmost digit to the left by exponents 160,161,162, 163, and so on.

    This means for 36E16, we’ll start  by multiplying E by 160, then multiply 6 by 161, and 3 by 162

    From the table, E = 14, so 14 × 160. Since 160  is an exponent of 0, it is equal to 1.

    14 × 1 = 14

    6 × 161 = 96

    3 × 162 = 768

    Next, we sum up all these figures.

    14 + 96 + 768 = 87810

    Hence, 36E16 is 87810  when converted to a decimal base system.

    Hex to decimal formula

    There isn’t a specific formula for converting hexadecimal to a decimal system. Simply follow the process:

    • Convert the hexadecimal value to its decimal digits (you can use the chart)
    • Add the product of each number.

    The process can, however, be expressed as

    N10=(dn × 16n) + (dn-1 × 16n-1) +…+ (d1 × 161) + (dn × 160)

    n = position of digits

    n-1 = position of digits from the left side

    d = individual digits

    Note that this is not a standard formula and if your ward finds it easier to follow the process above, let them.

    The below image shows the result of each exponent to be multiplied by the digit that has them.
