How to Do Long Division Step by Step

Long division breaks a big division problem into four repeating steps: divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down. Students repeat these four steps until every digit of the dividend has been used.

  • Divide: figure out how many times the divisor fits into the first digit or digits of the dividend.
  • Multiply: multiply that number by the divisor.
  • Subtract: subtract the result from the digits that were divided.
  • Bring down: bring down the next digit of the dividend and repeat the process.

Worked Example: Dividing Evenly

372 ÷ 4

  • 4 goes into 37 nine times (9 × 4 = 36), leaving 1.
  • Bring down the 2 to make 12.
  • 4 goes into 12 three times (3 × 4 = 12), leaving 0.

372 ÷ 4 = 93

Worked Example: Dividing with a Remainder

725 ÷ 6

  • 6 goes into 7 one time (1 × 6 = 6), leaving 1.
  • Bring down the 2 to make 12. 6 goes into 12 two times (2 × 6 = 12), leaving 0.
  • Bring down the 5. 6 goes into 5 zero times, leaving a remainder of 5.

725 ÷ 6 = 120 R5

Types of Division Problems in This Set

  • Long division with two- and three-digit dividends, using the divide-multiply-subtract-bring-down method.
  • Problems with remainders, where students write the leftover amount as “R” followed by the remainder.
  • Word problems that apply division to real-life situations, such as splitting costs or sharing items evenly.
  • Dividing multiples of 10 using mental math, for example 800 ÷ 4.
  • Missing-factor equations, where students solve for an unknown divisor or dividend.

What Kids Practice With These Division Worksheets

  • Solving long division problems with two- and three-digit dividends
  • Finding remainders and writing them correctly
  • Applying division to real-world word problems
  • Dividing multiples of 10 using mental math
  • Solving missing-factor equations
  • Checking their own work against a full answer key

Each worksheet includes an answer key, so students can check their results as soon as they finish a page and catch mistakes on individual steps right away, instead of waiting for a teacher to grade the assignment.

Mixing straightforward long division with remainder problems and word problems gives students repeated practice with the same core skill from a few different angles, rather than one repetitive format.

FAQ

What long division steps do these worksheets teach?

These worksheets teach the standard long division method: divide to see how many times the divisor fits into the dividend, multiply that number by the divisor, subtract to find what’s left, then bring down the next digit and repeat. Students use this same divide-multiply-subtract-bring-down process across two- and three-digit dividends, whether a problem comes out evenly or leaves a remainder.

What grade are these division worksheets for?

This set of division worksheets is written for grade 4 students who are moving from basic division facts into long division with larger numbers. Problems range from dividing multiples of 10 with mental math to full long division with two- and three-digit dividends, matching the level where most fourth graders build these skills in class.

Do the worksheets include remainders?

Yes. Several problems in this set are designed so the divisor doesn’t divide the dividend evenly, so students practice finding leftover amounts and writing them as a remainder, such as “R3.” This gives students practice recognizing when a division problem won’t come out even, not only when it divides perfectly.

Are answer keys included?

Yes, every worksheet in this set comes with a full answer key. Students can check their own work as soon as they finish a page, which helps them catch mistakes on long division steps, like a wrong subtraction or a skipped digit, right away instead of waiting for a teacher to grade the assignment.

What other division skills can students practice besides long division?

Besides long division with two- and three-digit dividends, this set includes word problems that apply division to real situations, missing-factor equations where students solve for an unknown divisor or dividend, and problems dividing multiples of 10 using mental math. This variety keeps the same core skill fresh across several different problem types.
