Many parents want to sign up their children for Prodigy, but don’t know if it will boost their math skills. The program seems fun, but is it worth purchasing a membership? Check out Prodigy math reviews in this guide to see its cost, structure, and level of personalization.

Key points

  • Features: 8/10. Most customers highly appreciate the engaging gamification in Prodigy  Math reviews.
  • Learning approach: 5.5/10. The platform is good to use for extra home practice, but it lacks depth for homeschooling.
  • User interface and experience: 6/10. Users mostly appreciate it, but some Prodigy Math review examples complain about difficulties setting up the account and unexpected charges with program updates.
  • Effectiveness: 7/10. Prodigy is a decent and engaging program to boost basic skills; however, there are not enough Prodigy English review examples to support this. Also, it’s not enough without teacher support.
  • Customer support: 8/10. Prodigy customer service is exceptional, solving all the customer problems within an hour.
  • Pricing model: 7.5/10. Free features are available, and the membership price is affordable. However, the upselling is based on aggressive marketing tactics directed at children.

I checked dozens of Prodigy reviews on Trustpilot and Reddit and relied on my math tutoring experience to set 7/10 as the average rating for Prodigy Math and English.

Prodigy reviews: A complete overview of how it works

Based on Prodigy Math reviews, the platform offers an interactive game-based learning experience for kids to practice math. They get a character to advance with rewards and quests that encourage them to apply and reinforce their math knowledge.

Best for: Parents looking for entertaining games that are useful for their kids’ math or English education.

In the Prodigy game, children participate in battles and quests that both adapt to their needs and align with the school curriculum for grades 1-8.

What is the difference between Prodigy Math and English?

Under the same Prodigy account, kids can practice math and English as two separate adventures. Even though both programs are gamified, Prodigy Math is more like a quest with battles and casting spells, while games in Prodigy English review knowledge with questions that provide resources to build your world.

What is the difference between Prodigy Math and English?

You can choose the desired program while setting up your account on the Prodigy platform and selecting a membership plan.

Note: This approach of advancing two skills at once is not unique, given the popularity of the Brighterly reading & math program.

💡 I wrote this article as my subjective yet unbiased review. To decide on my rating, I relied on Prodigy Math reviews on Trustpilot, a couple of Prodigy English review screenshots, and the tonality of Reddit reactions. You can do your own research to double-check the validity of my screenshots and draw your conclusions about the platform.

How does Prodigy math work? Features

Prodigy review pros #1: Gamified learning process

The choice to build the learning program as a game gets huge appraisal from platform users. Kids have a really great time passing quests and battles to level up their pets, so they improve their math and English skills with ease and joy.

How does Prodigy math work

⭐️ I can confidently rate the quality of the games (including both free and paid versions) as 10/10. It’s a unique and effective Prodigy feature that gets 100% public appraisal in all the Prodigy Math reviews I’ve seen.

Prodigy review pros #2: Helpful customer support

Even though the platform may have some bugs and malfunctions (more on that below), the presence of high-quality customer support covers most of the problems fast and effectively. I believe they were good at resolving issues raised in bad Prodigy Math game reviews, too, but that’s just my assumption.

How does Prodigy math work

⭐️ I will give customer support 9.5/10. Based on each good Prodigy Math review I’ve read, it works flawlessly, but I cannot tell for sure if it’s so for bad Math experiences and Prodigy English review cases. Although I suggest all is fine there, too.

Prodigy review pros #3: Overall learning effectiveness

Given that customers mostly use Prodigy as a supplement for real school education and see it as a game, it works well in this dimension. Parents mostly see it as a “great learning game” to “get kids excited.” If it’s everything you expect from the platform, you’ll get it.

How does Prodigy math work

⭐️ I’ll start being stricter on Prodigy from now on. The key platform’s strength (and its limitation simultaneously) is that it’s a game, and it’s a paid game. Your kids can play it for free and learn something new if you pay for the membership. But even a paid version cannot replace the real education or tutoring that Brighterly offers. Based on all this, I’ll give Prodigy 7.5/10 for its learning effectiveness.

Why is Prodigy so bad now? Disadvantages

Based on my research of Prodigy English reviews and its Math program experience, Prodigy has some areas for improvement. More on that below.

Prodigy reviews of cons #1: Need to pay extra to progress faster

Several people pointed out some aggressive marketing tactics Prodigy applies to push users to buy a membership. This drawback is especially visible for customers who have been with Prodigy for years, witnessing how dramatically the platform has changed to generate more profits.

Why is Prodigy so bad now? Disadvantages

If you think that’s a normal marketing practice, I have a competitor example to object to this statement.

💡Other math and reading programs like Brighterly build their value proposition based on an affordable price with long-term value for money.

Why is Prodigy so bad now? Disadvantages

🚩To be a profitable business, it’s not necessary to upsell your services to kids while they are playing. These customers are very vulnerable and too young to make informed decisions about the games they play.

Prodigy reviews of cons #2: Glitchy system

Another Prodigy English review shows that at times, the platform can get glitchy, including account creation or memberships. Given the complexity of Prodigy graphics and the paid model, I suspect users can run into such problems more frequently than they report. It may be one more reason why their customer support must’ve been working much better than reported in Prodigy math reviews!

Why is Prodigy so bad now? Disadvantages

💡Other platforms like Brighterly use more basic technology to deliver their tutoring service. In their case, the risk of a technological problem is minimized to just a poor Internet connection

Why is Prodigy so bad now? Disadvantages

Prodigy reviews of cons #3: May run into unexpected payments

Play Prodigy Game reviews indicate some really severe cases of money loss.

Why is Prodigy so bad now? Disadvantages

‼️Given that several reviews are pointing to sudden money charges, this problem seems to be an alarming pattern. Because of this, it’s worth being careful with linking your card and paying for the Prodigy service

A math or English language game may seem like an exciting idea, but I strongly recommend browsing real tutoring options before buying a membership. For the same (or almost the same) price, you can get a greater result and a true value for money on platforms like Brighterly.

Why is Prodigy so bad now? Disadvantages

💡Compared to several Prodigy game reviews, Brighterly looks like a decent option to compare with the platform before paying. If your goal is to keep your kid entertained but make them learn something real, I suggest trying a demo lesson from Brighterly and see how entertaining tutoring can work.

Prodigy Math and English review: Is the learning approach effective?

In terms of the Prodigy Math and English learning approach, the reviews are contradictory.

On the one hand, the core methodology behind the Prodigy approach is beneficial for some kids. They have fun reinforcing their knowledge of the learned concepts in the game.

Prodigy Math and English review: Is the learning approach effective?

But on the other hand, most Prodigy math reviews on Reddit point out that it cannot be seen as a complete learning tool. Teachers may use the game as an engaging home practice, but rarely rely on it fully while teaching new topics to kids.

Prodigy Math and English review: Is the learning approach effective?

⭐️My personal rating: 5.5/10. I give the Prodigy learning approach slightly above 50% because even though it is ambiguous, it’s still great at entertaining kids and encouraging them to advance in math and English independently.

Prodigy ratings: Is the interface easy to use?

While setting up an online account on Prodigy, I didn’t experience any problems (I especially appreciated hints on what my login and password are on the first entry). Onboarding goes smoothly and fast, so I could jump into the game as soon as possible.

Prodigy ratings: Is the interface easy to use?

I was about to put here 10/10 but then found this Prodigy Math game review stating there are problems connecting membership to an account.

Prodigy ratings: Is the interface easy to use?

This review made me think of other possible hidden problems. For example, when I switched to a slower Internet, the game started glitching. Also, the game is generally slow, which may be good for total beginners but irritating to kids who think faster. Finally, the review of a customer who got charged $2,390 (I posted it above) is also disturbing.

⭐️ I give UI/UX experience 6/10. On my computer, everything went smoothly, but some disturbing reviews made me revise my initial optimism and notice some possible drawbacks.

Is Prodigy Math worth it? Discovering effectiveness

Prodigy is generally marketed to students as a way to improve their learning experience. I’ve found this illustrative review that shows how teachers have used the platform for a decade in their real classrooms. It’s evident they truly enjoy its engaging and adaptive approach!

Is Prodigy Math worth it? Discovering effectiveness

But is Prodigy Math a full curriculum training option? Seems so. Many users highlight the same level of appreciation for interactivity, support, and real-life positive effects of Prodigy games.

‼️However, this parent raised an important issue. Once teachers proactively choose to use Prodigy in their classrooms, kids whose parents purchased a membership and those who went for a free version have completely different experiences (and so, the learning outcomes).

Is Prodigy Math worth it? Discovering effectiveness

Overall, if you go for Prodigy solely (especially in its free version), it becomes effective once combined with real school education or extra tutoring help. Otherwise, it’s a mostly entertaining tool that may bring some positive results.

⭐️Personal rating: I give Prodigy 7/10 because its games do a decent job in reinforcing learned information. But they are not enough as an independent learning tool.

Prodigy reviews: Connect support quality

Customer support is part of the Prodigy service, but it works Monday-Friday, 9AM-5PM ET, and you can reach it by sending a ticket to their email.

You can ask support agents about anything or read one of the how-to guides for personalized onboarding, membership perks, and account management.

 Prodigy reviews: Connect support quality

The Prodigy reviews generally find the work of customer service exceptional. And given that the number of negative reviews significantly decreased in the last year, they seem to manage most of the complaints on their side (before they become public)

⭐️My rating: 8/10. To date, they are almost flawless — or good at hiding any problems from Prodigy Math reviews I’ve checked.

Prodigy pricing: Does it provide good value for money?

Generally, the Prodigy pricing model seems to provide great value for money. Compared to most interactive and self-paced services, it’s a decent service for a good price.

Is Prodigy free?

Generally, you can play the Prodigy game for free, but a better experience comes with buying a membership. For some customers, the imbalance between paid and free versions is too striking and disappointing to guarantee that all the advantages are available if you play Prodigy for free.

Is Prodigy free?

How much does Prodigy membership cost?

The Prodigy membership cost varies based on the subject and the package you choose. For Prodigy Math, monthly rates range from $9.95 to $19.95/month, while a Prodigy English subscription starts at $6.25/month. Let’s explore the available plans below.

Prodigy Math membership cost

  • Learning plan Core: $9.95/month
  • Learning plan Plus: $14.95/month
  • Learning plan Ultra: $19.95/month

The packages depend on the number of games and subjects, along with extra gaming opportunities (like magicoins and mythical epics). Based on what’s inside, I recommend choosing Plus if you want to practice math without limitations.

Prodigy English game cost

  • Learning plan Level Up: $6.25/month
  • Learning plan Ultimate: $8.33/month
  • Learning plan Ultra (Prodigy Math, English, and Science combined): $9.91/month

English membership plans differ by the number of extras: each upgrade gives you even more Wishcoins, items, and gifts. The choice depends on how long your kid wants to play and, more importantly, how significant their progress becomes.

How much does Prodigy membership cost?

Is a Prodigy Math membership worth it? Generally, customers perceive prices as adequate and their investment as decent. As long as they understand it’s just a game, not the homeschooling method.

How much does Prodigy membership cost?

At the same time, customers who choose free membership frequently complain that they receive a worse experience than those who have paid. Once asked, “Is Prodigy membership worth it?”, Reddit commenters raise the problem of unethical advertising upsells to children, which doesn’t end with the chosen plan if it’s not the most expensive one.

If you’re looking for ways to save money, consider the annual prices for Prodigy Math packages. You can save 50% on each of the options.

Also, the platform lets you save 25% on purchasing 2+ memberships at once, which can work if your child wants to play the game with their peers.

How much does Prodigy membership cost?

So, you can significantly save on Prodigy pricing if you commit to playing for a year and with some friends. Otherwise, the price for the game may not address the expectations of parents.

⭐️ My rating: 7.5/10. Considering the quality of the game and its engaging effect in studying math, science, and/or English, the starting price of $9.95/month seems like a good deal. At the same time, the Prodigy education reviews reveal big problems with upselling tactics and the overall quality of the free Prodigy version, so I decreased my rating because of them.

Generally, if you’re searching for opportunities where each of your cents will work for the future of your child, I’d recommend looking at reading and math tutors instead of games. Nothing but tutoring helps your child grow fast and efficiently, and platforms like Brighterly offer tutoring help at an affordable price.

Why Prodigy Math game is bad or good? What people really think about the platform

Prodigy Math has received contradictory reviews, so let’s summarize everything people say about it here.

TL;DR: Prodigy is praised for its gamified and engaging approach and helpful customer support. Among the key criticisms, Trustpilot and Reddit users mostly mention sudden glitches, aggressive upsells, and unexpected payments due to technical or game updates.

What users love about Prodigy:

  • Engaging games
  • Satisfying customer support
  • Overall learning effectiveness (as a supplementary learning tool)

Why Prodigy Math game is bad or good

“Both my kids love Prodigy (7, 11). They like that they can play together and I like that I can use the teacher account (I homeschool them) to give them each specific math lessons. It has been a great supplement for their education, and they enjoy the game so much they can play for hours.”Trustpilot Prodigy review.

“I’ve called multiple times regarding different matters, and I’ve always been beyond pleased with the service received. The representatives are attentive, kind, and quick to resolve the issue.”Trustpilot review.

Why is Prodigy banned from school? (parent perspective):

  • Aggressive upsells aimed at children
  • System glitches
  • Sudden payments (looking like a scam)

Why is Prodigy banned from school

My 6yo is obsessed with this game. It claims to be educational, and they have to answer math questions to fill their ‘energy’, but the questions are so basic as to be irrelevant. It all seems very predatory, and the fact that it is supported by the school is pretty concerning.” — Reddit review.

Why is Prodigy banned from school

“I was not happy with the fact that kids who pay can advance faster in the game compared to their peers who didn’t purchase a monthly subscription. As this is used extensively in my child’s classroom, I felt it was unfair.” — Trustpilot Prodigy review.
