Meet the Winner of the Brighterly Summer Scholarship

We’re happy to announce our Brighterly Math Equity Scholarship winner, Leilani Gainer, a sixth-grade homeschooler who loves math, has worked hard to rebuild her confidence, and is now aiming higher than ever.

Leilani stood out as a persistent student, determined to keep improving in math. Even after struggling with the subject for years, she gradually rebuilt her confidence through tutoring. Now, Leilani is more confident and has a much stronger sense of what she can achieve.
Leilani is a competitive swimmer, and math has helped her understand her swimming performance. She uses numbers, timing, patterns, and comparisons to track her performance and recognize small improvements in the pool.

Leilani struggled with math for many years. But that didn’t stop her — she began attending a tutoring program and slowly rebuilt her confidence, one step at a time. Tutoring helped her develop a more positive mindset toward math. Now, Leilani knows she’s capable of reaching her goals in math and beyond!

Leilani comes from a homeschooling household — her mother is her main teacher. In the past, she struggled to understand math concepts. Negative numbers, story problems, and algebraic expressions have been especially challenging for her. Now Leilani has the opportunity to grow in math with the scholarship prize.
